The Azle Independent School District addressed concerns raised by students of former coach Carlos Font in an April 21 school board meeting. Font was arrested April 18 and charged with improper relationship between educator and student after a report was filed with the Azle Police Department.

During the regular monthly meeting of the Azle ISD board of trustees, one student spoke out against the district’s alleged inaction prior to an April 17 softball home game against Aledo High School. Hayley Carlson, a varsity softball player and Azle High School senior, stated that a report had been filed the morning of the game regarding the inappropriate conduct allegations and that AISD failed to stop Font from coaching the game.

“My only question is why y’all let Carlos Font coach us in our game — our last home district game — when there was a report that morning and that afternoon and the report was on file?” Carlson said. “Why was he not escorted off the field? What is your district policy? Because you let him hang one more thing over our head that night. Y’all have failed us by letting him coach us in that game. The district failed not only us, but every single girl on that field that night.”
