A woman in unincorporated Tarrant County near Azle was airlifted to a Dallas hospital after sustaining major burns the evening of Sunday, March 9. The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office, Briar-Reno Fire Department, Azle Fire Department and others responded to the scene to render aid.

“The patient was not using the proper equipment to burn outdoors and during the course of that an explosion occurred due to the gaseous vapors,” Briar-Reno Fire Department Chief Moses Druxman said in a statement to The Azle News. “The patient received burns to over 50% of their body and was transported to Parkland Medical Center Burn unit where they are stable but in critical condition. We encourage folks that if they aren’t familiar with burning debris to consult with the fire department or a professional to ensure an incident like this doesn’t occur.”

Local fire departments urge the public to take all the necessary precautions to avoid harming themselves or others, especially as wildfire risks mount in parts of North Texas. The National Weather Service issued a Critical and Elevated Fire Weather Risk over parts of the Southern High Plains Wednesday, March 12. Persistent dry, warm and windy conditions are expected to create a heightened risk for wildfires in the western half of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex for the week.
